We have the record of one JACOB A. REED who was a member of the S.W. Erwin Post No. 444 of New Virginia (Warren County) Iowa in 1887. This Jacob A. Reed was a farmer by occupation and served as a Corporal Company “K”, 102^nd Illinois Infantry, having enlisted 14 Aug 1862, residence at the time, Eliza, Illinois and was mustered out June 6, 1865 as Corporal. His father, according to our records, was Hardin and his mother, Jennie Harsh, his wife, Charlotte Turner, and he had one son, Frank, deceased. Jacob A. Reed was born January 9, 1831 (Post Record says “Ohio”, Graves Registration says Rush County Indiana) and he died Jan 23, 1891 and is buried at New Virginia, Iowa.

He would be the only one of our family that could give you any information about the family of Greenbury Ruble – my father was William Henry Ruble, G.A.R. at Indianola, born 1846 – died 1924. He was the son of George & Sarah Ruble, & was born in Indiana. His brothers were Milton, Jack, John and Tom – none living. My father was the only soldier in that family. I have one brother dead named Andrew Lawrence – died just last June – he may have been named after this Andrew J. Ruble – but I never knew of any Andrew or Greenbury Ruble. If you would write my brother Freeman – at New Virginia, Iowa he might be able to give you some information. My brother Perry had my father’s discharge papers, now he is dead. I now remember of my father speaking of Uncle Green Ruble and that must have been Greenbury. He had two girls: one was Bell, wife of Smith Tucker of Indianola & one called Amanda. I think she lived in Oregon. Bell did live in Indianola until her husband died & I think she lives with her daughter Hollace or son Hubert Tucker. If you would write to Vera Anderson at Indianola, she would get in touch with Bell or her children I am sure. This is the best information I can give you.

I note in the Record Tribune and Indianola Herald [newspaper] of Sept 25, the death of your brother, Harry E. Ruble. The notice did not show who his parents were, hence we are writing you to know if he is related to any of the Civil War veterans whose records we have. We would also like to know if the several veterans living in that vicinity are perhaps all brothers. Our records show William H. Ruble, a member of the Post 116 G.A.R. at Indianola, Greenbury M. Ruble of Post 309, Lacona and Andrew J. Ruble – the latter two both buried at Oakley, Iowa. They were all born in Indiana. We have some indication of the family of Wm. H. Ruble, that he was the son of Harrison and Harriet Martin Ruble, his wife was Sarah Hammer and children, Jackson and John Ruble. We would like to know if you can tell us the names of wife, children and parents of Greenbury Ruble. Andrew died in the war at age 21 and may not have been married. Post 116 Indianola, Personal Reminiscences p.43-47: His father died Aug 1845. He with mother & younger sisters & older members of family emigrated via prairie schooner, drawn by oxen, to Ringgold County, Iowa in fall of 1855, 23 days on road. Mustered in July 23, 1863 at Mount Ayr, Company D, 8^th Iowa Cavalry, first troops to rendezvous at Camp Roberts near Davenport, Iowa – Sent Oct 17, 1224 men to Waverta, Tennessee or Waverley. Horses failed rapidly – half regiment dismounted – last mount a mule. About 11 o’clock Aug 29^th I knocked at home of my wife’s parents and met a joyful reception by the family including my wife and 2 children. That was 65 years ago, I am now 90 years of age and I still think was is what Sherman called it (Hell) and I want no more. I was raised by a Christian mother taught to fear God and rely on Him for help so sought his daily protection for myself & family and for wisdom, strength & courage to perform the duties that were involving on me. By his help I gained the confidence of my officers so they promoted me from Private to 4^th Sergeant and had me detailed for strategic duties instead of trusting them with my superior officers.
