The Adjutant General, Department of the Army, has referred to the National Archives your request of March 20, 1951.

Among the pension records in the National Archives is a filed, cited as above, relating to the claims based on the Civil War service of “Charles Childers” as Private, Company G, 2^nd Missouri State Militia Volunteer Cavalry. On May 7, 1965, this veteran married Margaret Ann Huffman in Adair County, Missouri. The veteran and his widow consistently signed the surname as Childers, but others refereed to them as Childress and Childres. A copy of the veteran’s death certificate made on July 28, 1903, give his name as “Chas. A. Childres”, his date of death as March 18, 1902, and his burial place as Norwalk, Iowa. He was survived by a minor child, Julia O.

Obituary of Charles Childress (son of Charley Allen Childress), Des Moines Tribune [newspaper], Tuesday, April 24, 1951

Childress Rites Set Wednesday – Services for Charles Childress, 54, of the Woodland Nursing home, 1506 Woodland Ave, will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Evan Lilly’s funeral home, with burial in Glendale cemetery. A resident here 82 years, Mr. Childress died of a heart ailment Monday at his home. Formerly a laborer, he was a native of Green Castle, Missouri. Surviving are a brother, John W. of Long Beach, California, and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Allen of Dallas, Iowa, and Mrs. Mary Scholes and Mrs. Katherine Oglevie, both of Des Moines.
