Deaths, Robert Killen – Robert Killen, civil war veteran, departed this life on Jan 25, 1941, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jesse Marker, in Norwood, Iowa at the age of 96 years, 9 months and 25 days. His illness was of short duration, lasting only from Tuesday until Saturday morning at 6:30, when he slept peacefully away. Everything was done for his relief that loving hands could do, but to no avail. Robert Killen was one of the two last civil war veterans of Lucas County. When he was a young man he enlisted in Company F, First Kentucky Cavalry, on the first Monday in August 1861, and served two terms in the war and was discharged Sept 19, 1865. Two years ago he attended the “Old Soldiers Reunion” at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.” He was married to Lela Robison in Marion County, Indiana, who preceded him in death. Three children were born to them. A son, James, died in infancy, and another son, Charley, preceded him in death. A daughter, Mrs. Maude Keever, resides in Turkio, Missouri. Later he was united in marriage to Mary Etta Baker. To this union seven children were born, one of whom, John, died in infancy. Those living are Marshall, of Wilmont, Minnesota, Robert of Worthington, Minnesota, Mrs. Mary Sturgeon, of Irwin, Nebraska, Mrs. Linda Gibson of Sterling, North Dakota, Fletcher Killen and Mrs. Lena Marker of Norwood, also a step daughter, Mrs. Roxie McNeer of Milo, 21 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 6 great, great grandchildren, and other relatives and friends. Five brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Although he did not affiliate with any church, three years ago he confessed Christ as his Savior and was baptized at the age of 94 years. As long as he was able he enjoyed church and requested prayer many times. For the last thirteen years he made his home with his youngest daughter, Mrs. Jesse Marker. Funeral services, conducted by Mrs. Louis L. Martin, pastor of the Norwood Church, were held Monday afternoon at two o’clock at the Latter Day Saints church near Norwood and interment was in the cemetery nearby. Mrs. Harold Haltom, Mrs. Clarence Manser, Homer Puderbaugh and Darrel Parkin sang three hymns, “Rock of Ages,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” and “Abide with Me,” Pianist, Mrs. Earnest Fogle. Paul Bearers, John Roe, Dwight Curtis, Robert Benick, Marshall and Robert Killen, and Lloyd Sloan. Those coming from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Killen and Mildred and Howard, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Sloan, of Wilmont, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Killen and daughter, Marjorie, of Worthington, Minnesota; Mrs. Lee Sturgeon, Irwin, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Halferty and son, Donald, of Lincoln, Nebraska; Mrs. Maude Keever, Tarkio, Missouri, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McNeer and daughter, Elsie of Milo; Bill Baker and Bob Edwards of Newbern; Taylor and George Baker of Chariton. “It is hard to break the tender cord when love has bound the heart. It is hard, so hard to speak the words, “We must forever part.” Dearest father we must lay thee in the peaceful grave’s embrace, but the memory will be cherished when we see thy Heavenly face.
