Saddest experience of his army life was the killing by accident of his bunk mate James K. Cole on camp duty. When President Lincoln was shot the Regiment was at Hagerstown, Maryland and was sent to Washington, D.C. to do patrol duty and remained until mustered out. Comrade Lough was taken sick with White swelling in right leg and was sent home for treatment, and being absent and unfit for duty one of the Company Corporals was made Sergeant in his place – not owning to any fault.
