“Iowa Woman Looks Back on Century” Des Moines newspaper, Indianola, Iowa – The extreme youth of the United States as a nation becomes apparent when you look over the life span of Mahala Van Brunt Hargis, who celebrated her 104th birthday anniversary here Feb. 1. After all, American history from before the Declaration of Independence through the atomic commission controversy has come in the lives of two persons – Mrs. Hargis and John Quincy Adams, fifth president and son of the second president. Mrs. Hargis was born in Dark County, Ohio in 1843, when young Abe Lincoln, 34, hadn’t even been elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. At 80 – She was just a year and 23 days old when former President John Quincy Adams, still active in congress, suffered a stroke and died at a youthful 80. He’d been born in 1767. After her mother died, Mahala and her father moved to a farm near Lafayette, Ind., and then soon after to Champaign County, Illinois. When Van Brunt moved again, to Iowa where he started clearing the timber away to start a farm on Highway 60, at the west edge of Carlisle, Mahala stayed behind to live with the Casey Family at Champaign. Love – About the time the Civil War broke out, Mahala came to her father’s place. And that’s where romance first bloomed for her as Jasper N. Hargis, home on furlough from service with Company E, 4th Iowa Infantry, met her and fell in love. Jasper, at the end of his furlough – without attempting to wire a plea for an extension – went back to war. Mahala went to work in a woolen mill operated by a relative near Hartford. When Jasper returned still youthful and vigorous for he had been just 15 when he ran away from a Fourth of July picnic to enlist at Des Moines, his first idea was marriage. Mahala then was working as a housekeeper for a Dr. Ward in Des Moines. Farm – Well, Jasper and Mahala were married Oct 1, 1865, less than six months after President Lincoln had been assassinated. The Civil War G.I. cleared a farm for his bride near Carlisle, where her father still lived. It was about 55 years ago that Jasper Hargis was named steward of the Warren County Farm, where he served eight years before he died. Then Mahala, with her family, move into Indianola. Seven Children - children of whom three still live. She lives with the eldest, Clint Hargis, who has just come to his 78th anniversary. Another son, A.C. Hargis, 75, lives at Fresno, Cal, and “the baby,” E.M. Hargis, 67 is at Nampa, Idaho. Every day of his life, Clint Hargis eats with the same shiny silver spoon which has the name “Wolden” engraved on it. It’s in a good as new condition – but it’s a Civil War souvenir. His father, young Jasper Hargis, brought it home after finding it in a confederate cave.
“Mrs. Hargis is 103 Years Old” Indianola newspaper 1946
Two absent sons, Clate of Fresno, Calif., and Mert of Tampa, Fla. Are all that is lacking to make the 103rd birthday of Mrs. Mahala Hargis the happiest of her many natal days. Mrs. Hargis will reach that milestone next Friday, Feb 1. She makes her home with her son, Clint Hargis, who is 76 years old. Her memory is beginning to fail, at times she becomes somewhat confused as to names and places but the spirit that has enabled her to reach the unusual age of 103 still carries her forward to what she believes will be other birthdays. Her physical heath is good. She eats regular meals and walks about the house with the aid of a cane. She still remembers Abraham Lincoln and his big “plug hat.” Her recollection of the Civil War is clear and she remembers when her husband marched off to join Gen. Sherman in his campaign to the sea.
Des Moines Sunday Register [newspaper], March 23, 1947
“Mahala Hargis is Dead at 104”, Indianola, Iowa – Services for Mrs. Mahala Hargis, 104, who died here Friday, will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Baptist church. Mrs. Hargis, who had lived in Iowa since 1863 died at the home of a son, Clint, 78. She was 104 on Feb. 1. Born in Ohio – She was born in Ohio and lived in Lafayette, Indiana and Champaign County, Ill. Before her father moved to Iowa to start clearing a farm near Carlisle. She came to Iowa as the Civil War was breaking out. She married Jasper N. Hargis, a Civil War veteran, in 1865 and the couple started farming near Carlisle. Steward – From about 1892 until his death in about 1900 Mrs. Hargis was steward of the Warren County Farm. After he died Mrs. Hargis moved here. Surviving besides the son with whom she made her home here, are two other sons Clate of Fresno, Cal., and Mert of Nampa, Ida. Clate Hargis was here when his mother died.
“Mrs. Hargis, 100, Still Remembers A Lincoln” - Mrs. Mahala Hargis will celebrate her 100th birthday Monday, Feb 1, and friends are welcome to call on her that afternoon. She has not been in the best of health the past few weeks but she hopes to be able to greet her friends on her natal day. She makes her home with her son, Clint Hargis, and Mrs. Hargis. Mrs. Hargis is one of the few people living who ever saw Abraham Lincoln. She lived at Sidney, Ill. When he was elected president and she and several young friends went to the station and watched for the train carrying Mr. Lincoln to Washington, D.C. after his election. President Lincoln came out on the back of the car and spoke a few words, then waved them goodbye. Native of Ohio – “He was holding onto his large plug hat.” Mrs. Hargis said, “and stood very tall and straight.” He seemed to us to have coarse features, but we were “thrilled to see him.” Mrs. Hargis was born in Dark County, Ohio Feb 1, 1843 and move with her parents to Sidney, Ill. In 1855. She came to Iowa in 1863 and was married to Jasper Hargis Oct 1, 1865, at
[end of another article about her] … Never Learned to Spin – “One winter,” she went on, “an old squaw, who vowed she was 100 years old, and she certainly looked it, called at the home. She was so poorly dressed that we gave her clothing.” Mrs. Hargis is unique in that she never learned to spin or weave as was the custom in early days, but always did the outside work while her sisters helped with the housework. Mrs. Hargis has had her share of broken bones. She has had her left arm fractured three times, her right arm twice and has suffered two hip fractures. The last time she refused to allow the physician to put the member in a cast, and although her leg mended, she needs help when she walks. Recalls Civil War – Mrs. Hargis was at a July 4 celebration in a small grove at Sidney, IL when the Civil War broke out, and when the train stopped near the grove and persons on the train told the picknickers, she said they yelled themselves hoarse. Girls worked in the fields during the war and received good wages. Her late husband was with Sherman on his march to the sea. Mrs. Hargis has three sons, Clint the oldest, 73, Mert of Nampa, Idaho, and Clate of Fresno, Calif.. Clate will arrive Jan 30 for a visit with his mother and other relatives.

Obituary of James Hurst (Son of Gowan W. Hurst), Indianola Tribune [newspaper], April 6, 1950
JAMES HURST – James L. Hurst, son of Gowan W. and Jemima C. Hurst was born Feb 6, 1876, at Hartford and died March 23, 1950. A sister, Lillie A. Carpenter of St. Louis, Mo., and W.C. Hurst of Leon survive him. His early years were lived at Hartford. Aside from five years residence in Colorado he has lived 20 years at St. Louis, Mo. His absence during these years has not caused him to lose interest in his friends in Iowa and he cherished the thought that he could again make Hartford his home. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, March 26, at 2 p.m. at the Community church in Hartford by the Rev. Milo Morris, pastor of the Methodist church in Carlisle. Interment was in the Hartford cemetery.
