Dear Joy,
Ambrose McDermott was my great-grandfather. Mathias McDermott was my grandfather. Mathias had four children: Donald, Robert, Charlotee and Eugene (my father). Eugene had three sons: John (myself), William and Steven.
There is a family story of how Mathias was accused of spooking a neighbor's horse and was severely punished by his father Ambrose by horse whipping and making him sleep in the cornfield for the error.
There is also a family story of Ambrose encountering Jesse James while plowing the prairie just after the Northfield Raid. Ambrose had a pistol attached to the plow and kept his hand on it, so no trouble ensued.
My father Eugene was in the Battle of the Bulge and came near to being captured near Manhay, Belgium by the 1st SS Division. He recovered an SS Fliegerkorps watch from an SS colonel. There is a description of an SS colonel being killed by paratroopers of the 509th Parachute Battalion near Manhay in William Bauer's book, "Bloody Clash at Sadzot". Dad was close by at the time. Dad also recalled watching 3d Armored Division troops exacting revenge on SS prisoners for Malmedy and other atrocities.
