Funeral services for Henry H. Dohrer, a life long resident of Clayton County, were held at the Witt funeral chapel at 1:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon, April 19, and at the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church at 2 p.m. The Rev. Paul Kitterer officiated. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.
Mr. Dohrer died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Elvers, near St. Oaf, Wednesday morning, April 16, following a three day illness. He had reached the age of 88 years, 8 months and 13 days at the time of death.
Henry H. Dohrer was born in Cox Creek township, Clayton county, Iowa, Aug. 3, 1863, the son of Henry and Mary Springer Dohrer. He received his education in the rural schools near his home and the Elkader public school.
In the year 1894 he was united in marriage to Dorothea Meyer. For a time Mr. Dohrer worked as a fireman on the railroad and also worked in the railroad shops in Oelwein, Iowa. For 18 years he farmed the old homestead farm near Volga City. He started farming in 1900 and moved to Volga City in 1919, where he later operated a gas station until 1948. Since that time he has made his home with his daughters. He was a director of the Farmers State Bank in Volga City.
He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Oto (Marie) Elvers, St. Olaf, Mrs. Wayne (Gretchen) Abel, Waterloo, Iowa, Mrs. Dale (Florence) Roys, Volga City, Mrs. Wilder (Dorothy) Mattocks, Wadena, Iowa; one brother, William, of Eden, S.Dak., and one sister, Mrs. Kathryn Dittmer, Elkader; also 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his wife in 1930 and a son who died in infancy, two sisters, Mrs. Lena Lemka and Mrs. Amelia Henry.
Pallbearers were six grandsons: Dale Elvers, Don Elvers, Les Roys, Henry Allen Roys, Robert Abel, Delbert Kittner.
Relatives attending the funeral from a distance were: Everett Meyer, Oliver Meyer and Mrs. Pete Ward of Revillo, S.Dak.; Jack Dohrer, Marietta, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Wilson and Louis Klink, Cedar Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lemka, Oak Park, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Verly Clough, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Kelly and Mrs. Mildred Knutson, Dubuque; Mr. and Mrs. Dell Kittner, LaPorte, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Fay, Waterloo, and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Elvers, Waukon.
