Clayton County Register, 08 Dec. 1955.

Duluth L. Pieper, age 59, a prominent Clayton resident and widely known throughout Clayton county died at a Prairie du Chien hospital on Wednesday, Nov. 30, following major surgery performed on Nov. 27, from which he never regained consciousness.

Mr. Pieper was born Sept. 19, 1886, on a farm near Clayton and has lived in that community his entire lifetime. Always interested in the welfare of the community, he was actively identified with the civic interests of the town in promoting any project for its advancement, and the little town of Clayton will always stand as a monument to his work.

In 1934 he was named postmaster at Clayton and served until 1941, when he was appointed rural mail carrier out of the Clayton postoffice, which position he held until his death.

He was very active in promoting the Clayton County Rural Mail Carriers' organization and was secretary of it for 12 years. He was recently elected vice-president of the second district of the State Mail Carriers association.

One of the activities for which he was best known was his work with the Clayton County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. He served as county chairman for a number of years and was later secretary of the organization. He acted as chairman of the fund raising campaign for a number of years, and it was through his efforts combined with that of the Rural Mail Carriers association that an iron lung was purchased for Clayton county to be used in emergency cases.

Mr. Pieper was married Feb. 22, 1936, at West Union, to Miss Ada Ready of Bagley, Wis., who together with an aunt, Miss Minnie Pieper of Clayton are the only survivors.

Funeral services for Mr. Pieper were held on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Tuecke funeral home at Garnavillo, and burial was in the cemetery at Clayton. The funeral home was taxed to its capacity, which attested to the high regard that Mr. Pieper was held in.

Pallbearers, all members of the Clayton County Rural Mail Carriers' association, were: Art Meyer, Elkader; Wm. Allen, Garnavillo; H. J. Kiple, Farmersburg; Elmer Morley, Garber; Philmon Embretson, St. Olaf; and Wilbur Weyant, Guttenberg.
