Clayton County Register, 24 Nov. 1955.
Ida Zahrndt, the daughter of Louie and Augusta nee Meyer Zahrndt was born March 05, 1873, at Mederville, Iowa, and died at the Larson nursing home at St. Olaf, Friday evening, Nov. 18, at the age of eighty-two years, eight months and three days.
Ida never married, and came to Elkader in 1898. Her chosen work was that of a seamstress and for fifteen years she worked in the Leibrock Ladies ready to wear shop.
For many years she was faithful in the care of her mother, who in later life was a wheel chair patient. Her sister, Martha, died in 1924, leaving two small children, Helen, now Mrs. Lyle Shroyer, and Gladys, Mrs. Walter Fehlhafer. Ida took the responsibility upon herself in helping their father Henry Gmelin raise them.
Ida was afflicted with palsy, and on Jan. 27, 1947, she fell and broke her hip, after which she was never able to walk without help. The last five years she spent in the Larson nursing home in a wheel chair.
Ida was a member of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church of Elkader, and of the Eastern star.
The surviving relatives are nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services were held Monday, Nov. 21, at 2:00 p.m., from the Witt funeral chapel with the Rev. Paul Kitterer officiating. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.
