William Michael Sexton was born June 17, 1924 to John Lawrence and Hannah Margaret Baker Sexton. He died Jan. 21, 1945, was buried at sea, and is memorialized at the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines and has a cenotaph in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, IA.
Petty Officer Sexton served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Hancock (CV-19) and died when a TBF Avenger torpedo bomber, returning from a sortie, made a routine landing, taxied and disintegrated in a blinding explosion as one of its 500-pound bombs accidentally detonated. Fifty-two sailors were killed, including Seaman Sexton. Seventy-five other seamen were injured.
