PFC. SCHUETY, FAYETTE, DIES ON MINDANAO

Pfc. Harley Schuety, shown in the picture, was killed in action on Mindanao in the Philippines on May 8th, according to a telegram received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Schuety, of Fayette recently.
A veteran of 34 months of overseas duty with the 24th Division, Pfc. Schuety was wounded in the invasion of the Philippines in November. He spent one month in the Army hospital there and then returned to duty with his company.
He entered the service in February, 1942, and was trained at Camp Wolters, Texas. He went overseas in May of the same year; by August he was in Australia preparing to take part in many invasions: New Guinea, Bougainville and the Philippines.
Born in Clayton County in 1919, Pfc. Schuety spent his boyhood and young manhood near Fayette where he was engaged in farming before entering the service.

Harley Schuety of Fayette Is Killed

Fayette, Ia.—Pfc. Harley Schuety, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Schuety of Fayette, was killed in action on the island of Mindanao, May 8, according to a telegram received by his parents yesterday.
Private Schuety was a veteran of 34 months overseas duty with the 24th Division. He was wounded in the invasion of the Philippines in November.
He entered service in February, 1942, and received his basic training at Camp Wolters, Texas.
In August of the same year he arrived in Australia and participated in many invasions in that theater of operations.
Private Schuety was born in 1919 in Clayton County and spent his life in the vicinity of Fayette where he was engaged in farming.

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR HARLEY SCHUETY
Exercises Will Be Conducted by Rev. G. W. Ukena of West Union Sunday at Lima Church.
Memorial services for Harley V. Schuety will be held at the Lima Community Church on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. G. W. Ukena of West Union. The American Legion from Fayette will assist in the service.
Harley Vern Freddie Schuety, son of John and Nelda Schuety, was born Dec. 4, 1919, in Reed township, Clayton County, Iowa.
He moved with his parents to Fayette County in 1934, and to the present farm home near Lima in 1940.
On Feb. 3, 1942, he was inducted into the U. S. Army. He took his basic training of two and one-half months at Camp Wolters, Texas.
In May he was sent overseas to the Hawaiian Islands. In Agusut, he landed in Australia. He took part in campaigns in New Guinea, Bougainville, and the Fiji Islands. He took part in the invasion of the Philippines where he was wounded in November, 1944, returning to active duty with his old company within one month.
(The following is an extract from the letter sent to his mother by his Commanding Officer, Philip S. Irons III, Captain 24th Infantry):
“On May 8, 1945, near Mintal, Mindanao, P. I., this company was attacking enemy positions. During the attack, Harley was shot through the chest by a Jap sniper. He died instantly, without suffering any pain. The next day he was buried with a ceremony befitting his faith in Grave No. 72, in our United States Armed Forces Cemetery, Talamo No. 1, near Davao, Mindanao, P. I. It is a beautiful cemetery, covered with green grass, and his grave will always receive the necessary attention.
“Harley always showed great courage and bravery while in combat against the enemy. His loss is deeply felt by all the officer4s and enlisted men in this organization.”
He leaves to mourn his passing his parents, one brother, two sisters, his grandmother and many relatives and friends.

Hold Service Sunday for West Union Hero
West Union—Memorial services for Pfc. Harley V. F. Schuety, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Schuety, who was killed in action, near Mintal, Mindanao, Philippine Islands, on May 8, 1945, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, in Lima Presbyterian Church by the Rev. G. W. Ukena, West Union. The Fayette American Legion will assist.
According to his Commanding Officer, Pvt. Schuety was shot through the chest by a Jap sniper while attacking an enemy position. He was buried the following day in the United States cemetery near Davao, Mindanao.
Harley was born Dec. 4, 1919, in Clayton County, and moved with his parents to Fayette County in 1934, and to near Lima in 1940. He was inducted into the Army in February, 1942. Following training at Camp Wolters, Texas, he was sent to the Hawaiian Islands and later to Australia. He took part in the campaigns in New Guinea, Bougainville, and the Fiji Islands, and was wounded on the Philippines in November, 1944.
Survivors besides his parents are a brother, two sisters, a grandmother and many other relatives.
