R.S. was married to a Margaret Coplin. In a census copy that I have from 1850 Oswego N.Y. it shows R.S.'s children living with a woman named Catharine age 32. I'm assuming that either Margaret went also by the name of Catharine or that Margaret died and Catharine was her sister left in charge of Arthur age 12, Oren age 7, and Adella age 3. All four of them show up in this census but R.S. does not. Possibly this was when he was scouting Iowa for land or homesteading Iowa. I have bankruptcy notices as follows:
John L. Dickinson fo town of Albion 7/20/1842
Rudolphus S. Dickinson town of Mexico 7/20/1842
Ichabod Dickinson Oswego 1/18/1843
Morgan Dickisnon 1/18/1843

and a mortgage default for Asa C. Dickinson 1/12/1842.
1850 shows R.S. and wife(?) traveling to California and back with Jacob Scheisser of Scott County Iowa.
1853 R.S. and wife Emily purchased 40 acres in Liberty township, Scott Co. Iowa under Emily's name.
1854 Dixon wasincorporated as a town. R.S. was postmaster and justice of the peace. Also built my house and ran a general mercantile, bar, post office and hotel in it.
1860 R.S. founded town of Calamus Iowa.
R.S. and Emily had 6(?) more children. In a census dated August 4, 1870 from Olive township which is in Clinton County Iowa (a neighboring county to Scott county which is where Dixon is. I acutally grew up in Calamus which is only 10 minutes from Dixon)it lists Rudolphus age 57, Emily age 39, Merritt age 32, Ellen age 15 and Hattie age 12. It also states that the value of his real estate was 4,000 and the value of his personal estate is 7,000. It lists that R.S. was born in New York and that in 1870 he was employed as a general merchant. Emily was also born in New York and was employed at "keeping house".
In a census copy that I have from 1860 it shows two more children by the names of Franklin age 11, and Alona age 8.
