Clayton County Register, 12 July 1951.

Daniel E. Lowe was born in Volga nearly 80 years ago. His parents were David and Eliza Dempster Lowe. His grandfather, James Lowe, took up land from the government in 1844. This tract, located about a mile northwest of Volga, has since been known as the Lowe farm, having been tilled in turn by James, David, and Daniel Lowe.

Daniel Lowe passed the years of his childhood, youth and manhood in this community. He received his education in the Volga School. He learned farming and conducted that business for many years on the home farm.

Cora E. Potter and Mr. Lowe were married on Nov. 15, 1892, and they established their home and passed all their active years on this farm. Here their two children were born and grew to maturity.

Mr. Lowe, highly respected throughout the community, served a four-year term as Clayton County Coroner, and was for many years a Justice of the Peace.

He enjoyed good health to the very last. It was typical of his ability to enjoy life that he attended the ball game on the Fourth of July. Early the next morning pains began which became intense, and he succumbed to arterial thrombosis at about 1:20 Thursday afternoon, July 05.

Surviving are his wife, the companion of nearly 59 years, and their two children: Arthur D. Lowe of New York City, and Mrs. Grace E. (Charles Z.) Potter of Graf; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Boleyn of Volga. A grandson, Clyde Lowe, was killed in Italy in World War II. Two other grandsons are now in the service: Kenneth Lowe, in the U.S.N., now in Korea, and Richard Potter, in the Army in Germany. Another grandson, Dannie Potter, is farming at Graf, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Norma Potter Vondra, lives at Cuba City, Wis. There are a number of nieces and nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon from the late home to the Methodist church, with the Rev. Floyd R. Maynard in charge. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Kohls sang "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder," and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Burial was made in Hill Crest cemetery just west of Volga. The casket bearers were Will Wirkler, Vernon Wirkler, Frank Phillips, John Follon, Lyle Jennings and Edward Larson.

Relatives from out of town attending the funeral were: Arthur Lowe of New York City; Mrs. Nita Lowe of Dubuque; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Z. Potter and son Dannie of Graf, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Edwin H. Thompson and daughters, and Mrs. Lyle Potter of Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Otto Popenhagen, Mrs. Viola Maynard, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Potter, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Landas of Fayette; Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Kaberle of Strawberry Point; Mrs. Velma Pons and Lavonne of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Dale Howland and George Jellings of Oelwein; Mrs. Mattie Fox and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith of Arlington; Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Potter and Miss Juanita Potter of Groves, Okla., and Ed Bissel and Mrs. Ida Robinson of Edgewood.

Among friends from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Kohls, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Overbeck and Mrs. Ida Dillon of Strawberry Point; Mr. and Mrs. James Brink of Arlington; Mr. and Mrs. Norman Boyes and sons and Miss Lois Boyes of Graf, and Mrs. Myra Thompson of Cedar Rapids.
