Sarah;
You said that several of the Norwegian families returned to Norway. Is there a source where I can get more information on this? Why would families from a rich, agricultural area move back to Norway in the late 1880s and 1890s? I know that Karen Marie Simensen (my great grandmother) did return to Norway, shortly after Selma's birth. She then married Ole Johan Sevland (Olsen)in Karmoy on 13 April 1893 and returned to America with Selma and four new children plus two from his former marriage in 1900. I have sent for records from the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. They do have a geneaology volunteer, so we shall see! I have not found this family on any census, but on records from baptism for Selma with several names and dates.
Anyone have any ideas? I am about to give up on Jorgen (George) Anderson, railroad attendant and great grandfather!
