Just three days past twenty-nine years ago, Herman Tighlman Gibbons was born in Decatur County, on the 15th day of January 1900. This promising life was ended by the accidental discharge of his gun while hunting on January 18th, 1929. When Herman was a lad of only ten years he removed with his parents to Warren County where he has since lived a useful life. He chose as his companion for life Genevieve Ellison, to whom he was married on Jan. 11, 1924. To this happy union was born one son, Herman Dwight, now three and a half years of age. He was graduated from Hartford high school, being a member of the class of 1919, after which he took a business course at Des Moines University. A good student then, he was always a student, keeping himself well informed by reading the latest news on world affairs and achievements in science. His was a cheerful optimistic spirit. It was he who often suggested a way out when others saw only defeat ahead. As a husband, he was true and kind, cheerfully providing for the interests of his home and loved ones. As a son, he was respectful and obedient, accepting his duties cheerfully. As a father, he was kind and gentle and the little Herman Dwight was most delighted when he could have a playful romp with Daddy. Ill-will found no lodging place in his spirit for he was big enough in heart to candidly forgive. From childhood he was a member of Sabbath school and was found doing his part in the activities of his class. He was also associate member of Friends church at Middle River. There is left in his passing, a wife, Genevieve Gibbons, one son, Herman Dwight, his parents, Len and Jennie Gibbons two sisters, Honor and Faythe, all at home. Herman Gibbons will also be missed by many relatives and a large circle of friends. As a church attender and Bible scholar he was early taught that Christ is Savior, and we are steadied with the thought that he communed with God. A large concourse of friends attended his funeral which was held Monday afternoon at the Middle River Friends church, conducted by the pastor, Mrs. Cassie Commons, and his body was laid to rest in the Middle River Cemetery.
