Obituary
Ernest John Martens was born Feb. 2, 1889, in Martensdale, a town named for his father, John F. Martens. He attended school near Martensdale, and business college in Des Moines. He was united in marriage to Edith Calvert in 1912, and at that time was in the banking business in Des Moines. Later he organized and conducted the bank at Menlo. Leaving the bank at Menlo, he and his family moved to a farm near Martensdale, where they lived for nine years. Because of failing health he had to abandon the farm and seek lighter occupation. He then became associated with the Jewel Tea Co., which took him from Iowa to San Antonio, Texas, where he became assistant branch manager for the company. For the past year his work took him to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where the family now resides. Jan. 1 of this year, it was necessary for Mr. Martens to retire. He died at his home in Oklahoma City, Saturday, May 14, after a lingering illness.
He is survived by his wife, Edith: two daughters, Virginia of Oklahoma City and Mrs. Helen Parkins of Winterset; one granddaughter, Sandra Lynn Parkins; four brothers, Raymond, George, John and Carl, all of Martensdale; and one sister, Mrs. Mathilda Gates of Norwalk. Funeral rites were held at Dunn’s Funeral Home in Des Moines with burial in the cemetery near Martensdale, Ernest Martens’ old home.
