It is not clear to me what the people in the courthouse did with respect to the records. It is quite possible they did release them to the Wapello County Genealogical Society who in turn released them to the LDS library to microfilm. However, in my opinion, the Wapello County courthouse should have known exactly who was going to be responsible for copying the records, where they would be during the copy process, what safeguards would be taken to protect the records during the copy process, how long the copying process would take, and most importantly, when and where the records would be returned once the copying process was completed. At this point, with the information we have been able to obtain from the people at the courthouse, it is obvious they completely dropped the ball and have no idea what is going on.
Is there someone who lives in Ottumwa or Wapello County who can check with the Wapello County Genealogical Society and see if they ever received the documents from the courthouse and then,in turn, released them to the LDS library?
I think someone needs to be held accountable for this situation. Do we need to start a letter campaign to the courthouse or the Ottumwa Courier to get some attention, outside of the message board, focused on this matter?
