1990 NO 29Dr. G.M. "Mac" Trout
Dr. G.M. "Mac" Trout of East Lansing, Mich., age 94, died November 1, 1990, at Sparrow Hospital.
Dr. Trout born March 7, 1896 in Birmingham, IA and was a resident of East Lansing, Mich. for 62 years. He was associate with MSU since 1928 in the Dairy and Food Science Departments. He pioneered research on the homogenization of milk in the late 20's and 30's.
He was the brother of the late Nelda (Mrs. Wright) Sargeant of Douds and visited frequently in this community. He was a member of Celestial Lodge No. 413, A.F.&A.M. at Douds.
In 1929, Trout invented the milk homogenization process currently used worldwide.
The process pasteurizes the milk before passing it through screens at high pressure, which keeps fat and milk from separating. Without prior pasteurization, homegenization(err) ruins the flavor.
In 1945, he received the Borden award for research homogenized milk.
Dr. Trout graduated from Iowa State University in 1923 and received a Master's degree from there in 1924 and a Ph. D. from Cornell University in 1936.
Surviving are his wife, Agnes M.: one daughter, Mrs. Nelda M. (Monte) Stuck of Redlands, CA; one son, James Trout of Jackson; seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 2:30 p.m. in Peoples Church, 200 West Grand River, East Lansing with the Rev. Dr. Richard E. Murdock, Pastor Emeritus, officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery with military services provided by VFW Post 67 DeWitt, Edwin J. Leyanna Post.
