Mike Hegland, 97, Died Monday at Home in Roland

Roland, May 19--Michael Hegland, 97, who had been a resident of this community since coming to America with his parents from Etne, Norway, when a lad of 12 years, died at the home of his daughter here Monday evening at 7:30, from complications due to his old age.

Born at Etne, Norway, January 3, 1849, son of Ole T. and Bretta Hegland, he came to America with his parents when but 12 months of age, making the trip via Quebec, Canada. They came direct to Roland and here has been the Hegland home since, where the parents and several of the brothers passed away. When the Civil War came, Michael, the youngest of the five sons, although very young, was anxious to enlist but the father decided he was needed more at home.

He was united in marriage to Alice Caroline Larson at Story City August 10, 1870, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Amlund, a pioneer Lutheran minister of that place.

They located on a farm just in the west edge of Roland and established their home, which was known as the Mike Hegland homestead until 1903, when they retired and built a home in Roland. Later they built and occupied a second home here and it was there that they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1920, which is remembered as a most auspicious event. During the same day their granddaughter, Mable Jacobson, was married to H. N. Bakke of Roland.

Mrs. Hegland died in December of 1927. After her passing, Mr. Hegland lived in the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. O. Anderson. They are survived by three daughters and three sons; they being Mrs. T. S. Erickson of Sioux Falls, S. D., R. L. Hegland of Sharon, N. D., Mrs. M. O. Anderson of Roland, H. T. Hegland of Iowa City, M. N. Hegland of Los Angeles and Mrs. Leo Davis of Central City.

One grandson, now in the service, is at this address: J. E. Hegland, ATO 801=B, New Foundland.
