Kermit L. Helland
Jan. 25, 1912, to Jan. 17.2001Kermit L. Helland, 88, of Nevada, died of congestive heart failure on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Story County Medical Center, Nevada.
He was born Jan. 25, 1912, in Roland to Oscar J. and Sara (HUntrods) Helland. He graduated from McCallsburg High School in 1931. He managed the lumber yard in Zearing, then became a Farmland Industries field man in 1952 and later served as Story County Assessor for 22 years, retiring in 1982. He had also served in the Marine Corps during World War II. He married Wilma H. Cox on Sept. 20, 1935, in Marshalltown. They had been married for 66 years. He was a member of the Zearing Christian Church, the Samuel-Reid American Legion Post No.334 of McCallsburg, and a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 99 A.F. and A.M. of Nevada. Helland was a resident of Zearing until moving to Nevada in 1997.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma Helland of Nevada; a daughter, Karen (and Fred) Bookey of San Jose, Calif.; and a grandson, Eric Bookey of Auburn, Calif.
His parents and a brother, Harlan, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 22, at Zearing Christian Church. Burial was in the Lincoln Township Cemetery, Zearing. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family. Fredrigill Funeral Home, Zearing, handled arrangements.
