From Ames Intelligencer April 7, 1898 (page 4)

Carlos Howe, one of the oldest citizens of this county, committed suicide, presumably about 7 o'clock last Tuesday evening at his home about six miles southeast of here. Yesterday about noon he was found in his room with a bullet wound just above the right ear, and a revolver from which a shot had been fired lying near. It was evident that death had occurred several hours before. Dr. Mills, of McCallsburg, county coroner, was notified and arrived at the scene last evening. A jury composed of Dr. Copestake, Geo. Copestake and Ed. Crane, was formed. They found that deceased had come to his death by a pistol shot wound administered by his own hand. Mr. Howe was 85 years old and very feeble. He rented his place to Geo. Denton, with whom he boarded. Tuesday evening Mrs. Denton visited a neighbor, and Mr. Denton was at the barn doing chores. It is supposed that the deceased took his life at that time as it was the only time when the family would not have heard the report. When Mr. Denton returned to the house he supposed that Howe had retired. The fact that he failed to appear at breakfast occasioned no surprise as that frequently happened. At noon, however, Mr. Denton investigated and found things as described above. The deceased was one of the old residents of this section. The funeral will be held from the home this afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. Thomas in charge. The interment will be at Pleasant Grove.
