OBITUARY
MRS. MARIETTA BORN
Mrs. Marietta Born was born in Farmington, Conn., Aug. 19, 1853, and passed away at Milford, Iowa, Nov. 29, 1942 at the age of 89 years, 3 months and 10 days. Daughter of Carlos and Eliza Howe, she had two brothers and one sister who have presided her in death.
When she was two years old the family moved west to McComb, Ill., where she spent her girlhood. During the last year of the Civil war they came to Iowa, living awhile at Mount Vernon and then to Ames where they established their home.
At the age of 16 she was united in marriage with Jacob Born, a veteran of the the Civil war, at Ames on Oct. 31, 1869. They moved to a farm south of Story City where they lived for many years, excepting three years, 1878 to 1881, they live at Bloomington, Nebr., where Mrs. Myrtle Carnes was born. In 1881 they came back to the same farm in Iowa.
To this union ten children were born, of whom six are still living: Fred of Inglewood, Cal.; Bert of Canby, Minn.; Mrs. Myrtle Carnes of Milford; Mrs. E. S. Owen of Minneapolis; Dr. A. L. and Jay Born of Story City. Lafayette and John passed away in infancy; Mrs. Winnie Scott of Parker, S. Dak., and Mrs. Harriet Eaglebarger passed away several years ago.
Her husband passed away on Feb. 2, 1897, and was buried at Ames. She remained on the farm for awhile after his death, later leaving the farm and making her home for awhile with her son, Dr. A. L. Born at Story City, and finally going to live with her daughter and son-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Carnes at Lake Crystal, Minn. She also spent several winters in Milford at the homes of her son, Fred W. Born, and daughter, Mrs. Harriet Eaglebarger.
About ten years ago Mr. and Mrs. Carnes and she moved to Milford to live, where she remained until her death.
Shortly after her marriage she and her husband united with the Christian church near Ames. She had remained faithful all her life. She leaves six children, a number of grandchildren, great grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn her departure.
A service was held at Milford on Tuesday, Dec. 1st, conducted by Rev. Jesse Korthal off Fargo, N. D., an old friend who had visited her many times within the past couple of years. He spoke of the many lovely visits he had with her. After this service she was brought to Ames where another service was held on Wednesday at 2 p.m., at the Adams Funeral home. Two songs, "Some day the silver cord will break" and "The Perfect Day" were given beautifully by Mrs. Young. A very inspiring sermon was given by the Rev. Moore of the Christian church of Ames. A large number of her early friends were present at the service. The casket bearers were her four sons and her two sons-in-law. She was interred by the side of her husband in the Ames cemetery.
