Death of John Egenes
Funeral of Well Known Old Time Citizen Was Held in Roland Monday Afternoon
John Egenes, for many years a resident of Story City, succumbed to the sickness from which he had suffered for several months, his death occurring at the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines last Saturday, following an operation.
He reached the age of 75 years and 6 months.
Funeral services were held in Roland Monday, conducted by Rev. Allen E. Nelson at the home and in the Bergen Lutheran church, in which he had been confirmed by Rev. Jacobson in the fall of 1881. The casket bearers were: Sven J. Nessa of Story City, Osmund Thompson and Wm. Cunningham of Roland, Carroll Richardson, Maurice Nissen and Fritz Krause, all of Renwick.

All the children of the family were able to be present, besides ten grandchildren.
John Egenes Obituary
John Egenes was born at Norway, Benton county, Iowa, March 4, 1867, a son of Andrew and Margaretha Egenes. The family home continued continued in Benton county until 1881, when they moved to Story county, settling on a farm near McCallsburg.
There the young man attended local school and later high school in Nevada, and finally Iowa State Teachers college at Cedar Falls. He taught school for a time, but in the meantime had learned the telegraphic trade and in 1891 became depot agent for what was then the Iowa Central, at the station in McCallsburg.
He was united in marriage to Emma Louise Anderson in November, 1891, and soon after was transferred to Story City where he served as agent for the Iowa Central for 19 years.
The first Mrs. Egenes died in 1907 leaving the husband with seven children between the ages of 10 days and 14 years.
It was on November 26, 1911, that he was united in marriage to Martha Anderson of Roland.
Quitting the railroad work for a time, he engaged in the hardware business at Story City, in which he continued until about five years ago, when he retired and moved back to Story county, locating in Roland.
Failing in health recently he was finally taken to the Iowa Lutheran hospital, Des Moines, where he received care and treatment, but passed away Saturday, Sept. 26.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha Egenes, and seven children, as follows: Iver A. of Story City; Mrs. Geo. Thompson of Ostrander, Minn.; Mrs. W. J. Hensel of Auburn; Julius of Sutherland; Byron of Los Angeles; Harold of Delevan, Wis., and Mrs. Lowell Neveln of Des Moines.
He also leaves 18 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Tom Johnson of McCallsburg.
