BEN HOLM IN BUSINESS HERE NEARLY 60 YEARS
Ben T. Holm, the son of Torbjorn and Randie Holm, was born in Holmen, Skaanevik, Norway, March 13, 1860. He immigrated to America in the year 1883 and entered into the harness and saddlery business with his brother, T. T. Holm, at Story City in the year 1884.
He entered the harness business in Roland for a few years, later returning to Story City to continue his harness shop here until his retirement because of illness in the early winter of 1940.
Mr. Holm was united in marriage to Sophie C. Olson, May 22, 1890. This brief union was terminated by her death on April 22, 1891.
On Nov. 2, 1893, he was united in marriage to Olena Jorgenson, who preceded him in death on August 3, 1924. Six children were born to this union, three of whom survive to mourn their father's demise, namely: Sherman, Olive and Margaret, all of Story City. A brother, Christopher, and a sister, Bertina, survive him in Holmen and Aetna, Norway, respectively.
Ben Holm was taken ill during Christmas, 1939, and has been failing since. Since last February he has been bedfast. At the time of his death on Monday, August 24, he was 82 years, 5 months and 11 days of age.
Until his illness Mr. Holm was an active member of the St. Petri congregation--ready to help and regular in attendance. Until four years ago he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Story City Old People's Home and Hospital, of which he had been one of the active organizers. He had also served a number of years on the school board, besides taking a fine interest in matters pertaining to the community at large.
