Don, age 83, passed away Friday, October 17, 2013 at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines under Hospice Care. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Caldwell Raddatz Funeral Chapel, 8201 Hickman Road, Urbandale. Visitation will be 5 to 7:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home. Interment will be in Glendale Cemetery.

Don was born on October 10, 1930 to Howard and Oma (Thompson) Van Horn. He married Mary Joanne Minnihan on August 27, 1949. Don served his country with honor in the US Marine Corp from 1949 to 1954. He worked as a mechanic supervisor at Iowa Power and Light (now Mid-America) until his retirement.

Don is survived by his children, John, Joan, and Jerry (wife Lisa); daughter-in-law, Margene Van Horn; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many loving family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joanne, son Bill, and brother, Harold.
