In Response To: SEARCH INFO (Christine Bockenstedt)

This information applies to all queries to help all of you out a little. The Census is your tracking tool to follow the life of these children. Do not forget the 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915, 1925 IOWA Census which was different from the Federal Census. Look for any children that were born in New York and be prepared that you need to divide your search into townships, check EVERY SINGLE PAGE of the Census. Other red flags are much older parents, no other children, different last name, look for the words adopted or fostered or lodger next to their name. The main thing to look for is born in New York, without that, it could be a regular adoption or foster situation. Be prepared also that some families changed the place of birth on the Census to make it look like they were born in Iowa and always a member of the family. Trust me--I have found two of them that had that done with one of them my own great grandaunt. This is NOT an easy project and searching ALL of the Census's is the only way to find ALL of the children. I have found twenty five of them for sure in the last ten months and started with five with one being my great grandaunt for a total of thirty. All delivered to a ten mile radius of my hometown (population 600) in 1888 and possibly another year. I used the 1895 Iowa Census and remember that there is no 1890 Federal Census because it all burned in a fire. Other replies on this site by me addresses the birth certificate issue. The Census EVERY SINGLE PAGE search is actually the easiest part of the whole process. Once you find them you have to research them. Good Luck Feel free to reply. These children need to be found and the next ten years are crucial.
