Last rites for Mrs. Alfred (Gladys) Carter, 81, were held at the West Liberty Chapel of the Barker Funeral Home Dec. 19, 1989 with the Rev. Ralph Farmer officiating. Burial was in Oak Ridge cemetery. Mrs. Carter died at Mercy hospital, Iowa City, Dec. 17.

The daughter of Chester and Nellie Dowling Watkins, she was born in Hayfield, Minn. May 20, 1908. She married Alfred Carter in West Liberty in 1926. She was head cook in the West Liberty school for many years, retiring in 1976.

She is survived by 2 sons, Robert, Melbourne, Fla. and A.J. (Bud), West Liberty; 2 daughters, Mrs. Rex (Marilyn) Swails, Coralville and Mrs. Wendell (Donna) Johnson, Springfield, Mo.; 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren and 4 step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son and several brothers and sisters.
