Funeral services for Yates Thurness, 85, will be held at First Church United, West Liberty, at 11 a.m. today (April 30) with the Rev. Ralph Farmer officiating. Burial will be in the North Prairie cemetery. Mr. Thurness died at his home in West Liberty April 27.

The son of Halbert and Daisy Fouts Thurness, he was born in Jefferson county, Ill. Nov. 13, 1900. He was married to Jewell Rains at Mt. Vernon, Ill. Nov. 29, 1922. The couple came to Iowa in 1930 and farmed until moving to West Liberty. He was a member of the Muscatine County Farm Bureau and First Church United.

He is survived by his wife, a son, Stanton, West Liberty; a daughter, Phyllis Smith, Iowa City; 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Leroy, West Liberty and Harold and a sister, Jewell Thurness, Centralia, Ill.
