Page 1This community was deeply grieved yesterday morning to hear of the death of John F. McLaughlin, for many years a resident of this community. He had been failing for two years, but his condition was not considered serious until Monday evening, when he suffered a stroke of paralysis. His death occurred at 3 o'clock Wednesday morning. Mr. McLaughlin lived on a farm east of town for thirty years, and moved to this city about 10 years ago. John Francis McLaughlin was born March 13, 1842 and was 74 years, 7 months and 4 days of age.
He served three years in the federal army during the Civil war, being a member of Company C. 11th U.S. Inf., 5th corps. After the war he spent a few months in Washington, D. C., where he was married May 3, 1866. He spent most of his life in Des Moines county, moving to Louisa county in 1885. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. McLaughlin. Mr. McLaughlin had many friends. He was an honest, upright and conscientious man and was entitled to the many staunch friends he made. Always cheerful and sunny despite the cares that fall to the lot of man, it was a pleasure for young and old to meet him and greet him. Those who knew him best were his truest friends, the fittest tribute to his integrity.
John McLaughlin will be greatly missed. The good wife and five sons survive. William, residing on the old home place east of Wapello; Charles, assistant engineer at the Port Louisa pumping station; John, court reporter for judge Hale in this district; Thos., of Muscatine and James of Carter, South Dakota. Funeral services will be held at the Catholic church at Dodgeville, Des Moines county, tomorrow (Friday) morning at 10 o'clock. Burial will be made in the Dodgeville cemetery.
