Jasper Hoosington Hawkins was born July 3, 2836, at Saranac, New York and died at Wapello, Iowa, Nov. 30, 1911, aged 75 years, 4 months and 27 days. He grew to manhood in Saranac, and after finishing a public school education, attended the Potsdam Academy. After leaving this school he followed the occupation of teaching for several years, living for a time in Toledo, Ohio, later near Chicago and in 1863 went to Ft. Dodge, where he taught for three years in the public schools. While so engaged he put in his spare moments studying law and after his removal to Jessup, Iowa, was admitted to the bar in 1868. He remained in that place until 1872, when he removed to Algona, Iowa. This was his home for eleven years where he was an active practitioner, holding the office of county attorney several years. From here he removed to Des Moines, Iowa, where he continued the practice of law, later opening an office in Guthrie, Oklahoma, at the time of opening that territory to settlement.

In 1897 he retired from active practice and came to Wapello, which has since been his residence. In 1856 he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Kingsley, who with the four children born to them - Mrs. Addie Byrne, of Wapello, Mrs. Effie Berryman, of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, R. G., of Wapello and E. B. of Seattle, Wash. - survive. The funeral services were held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Byrne, Friday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. E. C. Brooks, assisted by Rev. Montanus, with interment in the Wapello cemetery.
