Page 1Henry Thalenhorst, a soldier of the Civil war, died at Mt. Pleasant, in the State Hospital of Iowa, last Thursday, August 10th. The remains were shipped here the following day and taken to the home of Herman Otto where funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. David Froeschle, pastor of the German M. E. church. At the close of the service the G. A. R. post, of this place, took charge of the remains and laid the body to rest in the Wapello cemetery. Henry Thalenhorst was born in Prussia, German, January 16, 1833, and died in the hospital at Mt. Pleasant, Aug. 10, 1911, at the age of 76 years, 6 months and 24 days.
At the age of 21 years, he came to this country, first locating at St. Louis, Mo. and later locating in Wapello, Iowa. In 1862, while living in the state of Iowa, he enlisted in the army, serving as a private of Company E., 27th Regiment of Iowa Infantry. While engaged in a battle at Little Rock, Ark., he was wounded and taken to the field hospital, remaining unconscious for several weeks. From that time on he never regained his health. Later he was taken to a hospital in St. Louis, Mo., and finally to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, where he was an inmate of the State hospital until death relieved him of his sickness.
As a young man coming to a strange country he did not drift away from the church, but soon was soundly converted and joined the German M. E. church of this place. He is best remembered as to his christian character and earnestness in religion. His end was peaceful and his reward a home in heaven.
