John Black died at his home in Morning Sun Sabbath afternoon, April 23. He was born in Ire,and seventy-one years ago and came to America an unmarried man, when about twenty-five years of age. He was a farm laborer in Michigan for several years and then went to Pennsylvania on December 14, 1879. He married in Alleghany, Pa., Miss Jennie Patterson, a sister of Samuel Patterson, of this place. The following year they came to Iowa. Mr. Black lived on a farm several years as a renter, but in 1886 he purchased a farm in the Sharon neighborhood and resided on it until 1900, when he purchased property in Morning Sun. His wife was removed by death January 27, 1908.

From this time his niece, Mrs. Sarah Dickson, faithfully ministered to his wants. Four years ago he had a paralytic stroke from which he never fully recovered. Early in this year he fell from his chair and suffered a fracture of the thigh bone. From that time he gradually declined until his sufferings ended in death. He left no immediate heirs. Mr. Black was a faithful member of the reformed Presbyterian church. His end was a peaceful one. The funeral was held in his late home April 25, at 10 a. m., conducted by his pastor, Rev. C. D. Trumbull. The interment was in Elmwood cemetery.
