Page 1Mrs. Latitian Smith, of Morning Sun, died Monday, July 15, 1907, at the age of 73 years, 6 months and 12 days, after an illness extending over several months. Her maiden name was Sample. She was the daughter of David and Sarah Sample, who moved from Pennsylvania to Preble county, Ohio, in an early day, going on horseback. She was born in Preble county, Ohio, Jan. 3, 1834, where she continued to reside until about forty years ago, when she came to Iowa, locating in Morning Sun where she married and where she continued to make her home until her death. Her husband died about twenty-three years ago and an only son about eighteen years ago.
She was a woman of large physical frame and strength and of strong will and independence of disposition and great devotion of duty. For many years she has devoted herself to caring for the sick and unfortunate with a strong and tender hand. She was widely known and loved as "Aunt Let" among many of the best families of Morning Sun, where she cared for the sick and comforting the mourning. She was full of good works and her memory is blessed among those whom she ministered unto in the hours of need. She was a sister of Jas. Sample, a long time resident of Wapello. Dave Kirkpatrick of this place is a nephew of the deceased. The funeral services were held in Morning Sun Tuesday morning conducted by Rev. Thomas Younger, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Interment in the Wapello cemetery.
