Page 1We failed to make mention last week of the death of Mrs. Jane Thornton, which occurred June 27. She was almost ninety years of age and was in many respects a remarkable woman. She came with her husband to Iowa at a time when the Indians and the wild animals roamed at will. She was born in Ohio July 25, 1817. Her maiden name was Jane Wolfe. Her grandfather was David Wolfe, who fought with Tecumseh during the French and Indian wars. She was distantly related to Robert Fulton of steamboat fame and was a cousin of President Hayes.
She was united in marriage to John Thornton in 1837 and was the mother of nine children, only three survive. They are: Mrs. Ann Studdard of Salt Lake City, Utah, Mrs. Melinda McCurdy of Fairbury, Neb., and Mrs Jas. Singleton of Cone. There are thirteen grand children and ten great grand children and besides these she is survived by three sisters, all of whom are more than eighty years of age. She came with her husband to Iowa nearly sixty years ago and settled on a farm between Grandview and Muscatine where they lived for a number of years. Mr. Thornton died Apr., 1853. She had lived in Columbus Junction for thirty two years and less than a year ago went to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jas. Singleton, to spend her remaining days.
