He enjoyed the advantages of the common schools. Was married in 1851 to Miss Esther Clarkson, near Columbus, Ohio. To them were born eleven children, one of the children dying in infancy. Wright, Colfax, Ia.; Robert E., Franklin B., Lewis L., all of Wapello and Walter D., New Richland, Minn.
He with his family remained in Ohio until March, 1882, when he removed to Iowa. He located in Louisa county, near Long Creek. When he had lived here one year he moved to another farm, west of Wapello, where he resided for one year. Then in 1881 he came to the farm south of Wapello where he made his home until his decease. Though a farmer, he was public spirited and took an active interest in the welfare of the community about him, holding a different times the office of township trustee and other minor offices. As a citizen he was respected and upright. He was a true and affectionate husband, a loving and devoted father and an esteemed neighbor.
Six years before his decease, his wife, passed on before him to the better world. Since her death he made his home with his son, Lewis on the old home place. After his sickness about a year ago his vitality and general health had failed, though he was not seriously ill except during the last three weeks. He was converted in 1897 and he at once united with the M. E. church in Wapello. He spoke during his last sickness of his readiness for death. He died April 18, 1907, aged 75 years, 3 months and 21 days. The funeral services were held in the M. E church at Wapello, conducted by the pastor. His sons were his pall bearers.
