OLILN - Mrs. Bessie Ballou, 88, long time resident of Independence, died at her home Saturday, March 11. She was born Nov. 15, 1883 in Jones county, near Olin, the daughter of George and Delana Smith Phillips.

On Dec. 17, 1908 she married Asa Ballou at Davenport. Mrs. Ballou was a member of the First United Methodist church, WSCS, church circle and welcome class.

Survivors include two sons, Paul Ballou, Independence, and Howard Ballou, Washington, Ia.; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one brother, Frank Phillips, Olin. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1960; three sisters, Hattie, Cora and May, and one brother, Milo.
