AMBER - Funeral services for Alva Johannes Gerdes, 70, were Wednesday, Jan. 5, 1972 at Wayne Zion Lutheran church, rural Monticello, with interment in the church cemetery.
The Rev. Harvey C. Gilbertson officiated.
Mr. Gerdes died at his home Sunday, Jan. 2.
He was born in Cass township Dec. 24, 1901, the son of John and Anna Siebels Gerdes and married to Freda Zimmerman June 11, 1930, at Wayne Zion Lutheran church in a double ceremony with Mr. and Mrs. Louis Helgens.
Mr. Gerdes was a barber for a few years after his marriage, then farmed for a short while before doing carpenter work, an occupation which he followed the past few years.
He had been a member of Wayne Zion church since his marriage and taught Sunday school, was a member of the choir, past president of Lutheran Brotherhood and custodian of the cemetery.
Survivors include his wife; two children, Dwight A. of St. Louis, Mo., and Mrs. Jack (Patricia) Hoffman of Monticello; nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
Casketbearers were William Otten, Alfred Gerdes, Robert Gerdes, Lawrence Schafer, Vern Carlsen, Ervin Hanken, Marvin Jansen and John A. Gerdes.
