My father suddenly passed away on April 16, 2021. I am attempting to retrace his youth. Based upon what he told my mother, who is still living, he spent some time on a farm near Fairfield, Iowa, which I'd like to locate.

My father was born in 1944 and when he was approximately 12 his parents divorced. His mother moved in with friends of her family in or near Fairfield, Iowa, taking my father with her. After his mother was not able not able to care for him he was left with an elderly couple who were also friends of her family.

This would have been around 1956. The couple had at least one granddaughter of a unknown age at the time my father stayed with them. My mom says they were likely in the same age range as my father's grandparents, who were born in the 1890s. The couple also owned horses, which my dad loved to ride. I am uncertain if the couple lived on a farm or owned a property within Fairfield and had the horses housed on a separate property.

I do know that my dad had a paper route in Fairfield with over 100 customers to earn money. With a portion of the money he earned from the route he ordered a 12 gauge shotgun from a hardware store by himself. We still have the shotgun and its case. He and other boys would carry such weapons on their bicycles to go hunting in the country. Times were different then.

My father and mother were married on November 17, 1963. This elderly couple were still alive and so liked my father from years before that they traveled from Fairfield to Manly, Iowa to attend the wedding. My mother's wedding book has their names recorded and the gift they gave.

My mother initially wrote "Mary" and crossed it out. She cannot remember if this was the actual first name of the wife or if she was simply making a correction. Near the crossed out "Mary" are the names "Mr. & Mrs J. F. North".

So far I've tried FindAGrave, old Plat Books and some phone directories but nothing seems to match.
