Difficult to do a search given such limited info to work with.
When was John born?
Who were your John LANIGAN's parents? Siblings? Wife? Children?
Do you have an obituary for John? Death certificate? Will or Probate?
What information do you have that places him in Jefferson County during that timeframe?
What sort of information are you looking to find on your John LANIGAN?

A cursory check on Ancestry in the 1850 and 1860 Federal censuses turns up no hits for John LANIGAN in Jefferson County. Three state censuses were taken in the 1850s (transcribed, searchable and browsable from the Jefferson County site) and no LANIGAN turns up in Jefferson County. Plenty of LANIGANs in Iowa though, in Audubon, Black Hawk, Calhoun, Cass, Cedar, Cerro Gordo, Clinton, Crawford, Dallas, Guthrie, Howard, Jones, Polk, Shelby, Wapello, Webster, and Woodbury Counties. Have you looked there?
No LANIGAN marriages occured in Jefferson County between 1850 and 1860, unless they happened to be Quakers and then those were largely undocumented.
Iowa did not require vital statistics to be kept until 1880.
There are no recorded LANIGAN burials in Jefferson County.

Hate to say it, but this looks like a shot in the dark. Plenty of other leads for you to follow though.
