Verda; I received the pension file on Armstrong Hill, it was 50 pages long. Inside was one Surgeon's Certificate which gave the pensioner's name as James A Hill! James A Hill is found in the 1860 Census in Fairfield, Jefferson Co., Iowa not far from Alexander Duncan's family. The children in James A Hill(his wife is also named Elizabeth) family look like the same ones that are in Armstrong's family in 1850 West Virginia Census. In Elizabeth Hill's application for widow's pension she lists one child under 16, Julia. There is a Julia listed in the 1870 Census of James A Hill and Elizabeth. Armstrong and James A Hill must be one and the same. And Josephine and Mary Ann are sisters who married two Brothers named Duncan. Both Alexander Duncan and Andrew Duncan wrote letters testifying as to the condition of Armstrong and they appear in his pension file. Armstrong died 9 nov 1874 in Fairfield, would there be a obituary or probate record? Elizabeth moved to Washington County Kansas with her children's families. There is an Elizabeth buried next to Josephine in the Washington City Cemetery and I think that is her.
Things are fitting together. Barbara
