OBITUARY.
GREENHALGH.
After an illness of five and a half months, six weeks of which were spent in the hospital at Cresco, with the best of medical skill and excellent nursing William Greenhalgh passed from the scenes of time at seven o’clock Sunday evening. As peacefully as the orb of day sank below the western horison{sic}, so peacefully did our brother and friend yield up the scepter of time to enjoy the rest of eternity.
William J. Greenhalgh was born at Willmington, Delaware on October 20, 1842 where his early days of life were spent. With his parents he came to Iowa in 1856. The family located on a farm in Orleans twp., Winneshiek Co., about six miles northeast of Cresco.
On April 21, 1867, he was united in marriage to Phoebe Warburton and in happy comradeship they traveled the journey of life together. The first five years they lived on the old farm in Orleans twp. For the next twelve years, Mr. Greenhalgh was in the employ of Joseph Bancroft and son of Willmington, Delaware. They then returned to Iowa and lived in retired life at Osage in the residence that has been their home for the past thirty-three years.
Although of quiet disposition, Mr. Greenhalgh made a host of friends wherever he lived. He was always interested in the educational and religious welfare of the community, was a regular attendant upon the services of the church and, for a number of years, was an official member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Osage. For some time. He served with efficiency upon the school board of his city and was a man whose good judgment and counsel was valued and sought by the people of the community.
In the passing of Mr. Greenhalgh, the community and the state loses one of its highly esteemed and most valued citizens. He departed this life June 8 1919, age 76 years, 7 months and 18 days. In beautiful and loving memory, he leaves the wife and life long companion Mrs. Phebe Greenhalgh of Osage; a brother John of Cresco; quite a number of nephews and nieces besides a large circle of friends
The funeral service was held at the home of his brother John Greenhalgh at 612 Third Ave. East, Cresco on Tuesday afternoon June 10 at 2:30 o’clock conducted by Rev E. G. Copeland, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church. Impressive music was rendered by Mrs. Millie Herman and Mrs. Dr. E. H. Allen. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Interment was made at Oak Lawn cemetery.
The out of town friends attending the funeral were: Mr. J. H. Warburton of {illegible}, Mrs. William Warburton and Miss Jeanie of Milford, Ia., and Miss Gail Warburton of Walford, Ia.CARD OF THANKS.
We desire to thank our friends and neighbors for their many kind words and deeds during the sickness and passing of our husband and brother, and also for the beautiful floral offerings.
