Services for Mrs. Anna Phelan, 88, were held at 9:15 Wednesday morning, April 02, at the Witt funeral chapel and at St. Michael's Catholic church, Garber, at 10 o'clock, with burial in the church cemetery.
Her son, the Rev. Francis J. Phelan, pastor of St. Mary's church at McGregor, celebrated the mass and the Most Rev. H. P. Rohlman, Archbishop of Dubuque, presided in the sanctuary and gave the final blessing. The Rev. L. Ickel of Garnavillo was deacon and the Rev. L. Gruewald of Guttenberg was sub-deacon. Master of ceremonies was the Rev. F. Bradshaw of Volga. Deacons to the archbishop were the Rt. Rev. Msgr. B. H. Skahill, Elkader, and the Rev. Julius Olinger, Walker; master of ceremonies for the archbishop was the Rev. Gerald Shekleton of Dubuque. The Rev. Robert Saunders, Garber, delivered the sermon.
Mrs. Phelan died at her home in Volga township near Garber, Sunday, March 30, following an illness of one and one-half years. She was the last member of a family of twelve.
Ann Irene Magirl was born March 09, 1864, near manchester, the daughter of Dennis and Mary Ann McKeown Magirl. She received her education in the Delaware county schools and at St. Clara academy, Sinsinawa, Wis. She taught in the Delaware county schools for 15 years.
On May 06, 1902, at Ryan, she was married to Thomas T. Phelan, who preceded her in death in 1945. They lived at Ryan and in 1902 they moved to a home five miles west of Elkport. In 1934 they moved to the farm six miles north of Garber, where Mrs. Phelan died.
She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic church, Garber.
Pallbearers were Lawrence Matt, Hubert Lau, George Maier, Ray Conley, Reynold Sheffert, and Raymond Zapf.
Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McNamara and Mrs. Rose McCrea, Anamosa; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Dixon, Hartwick; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fink, Aurera; Lewis Magirl, Ryan; and James Magirl, Stanley.
