Cresco Girl’s Husband Murdered.
Herman W. Uecker, husband of Louise Kline, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Kline, long time residents of Cresco was murdered by bank bandits at Tollerton, Indiana, a suburb of Gary, on Saturday last.
He was a cashier of a bank there, and soon after opening for business in the morning the bank was “held up” by four automobile bandits, one of whom covered Mr. Uecker and shot and instantly killed him as the robber detected Uecker’s movement to secure a revolver under the counter.
Herman William Uecker was born at Elkader, Iowa, Feb. 12, 1878, and died June 14, 1919. He graduated from the Elkader high school at the age of 16. He had been in the banking business all his life. He was married to Emma Louise Kline at Cresco, Iowa, on July 19, 1905, and moved to Tolleston, Ind., in October, 1906. He was city clerk of the old town of Tolleston when it was annexed to Gary. Two children survive, Marjorie Louise and Marion Minna age 7. Also father and mother, two brothers and five sisters. He was appointed secretary of the school board this spring. He was a Mason and that fraternity had charge of the funeral which was one of the largest and most impressive ever held in Gary, according to the press of that city:
“The funeral procession to the grave was one of the largest the city ahs seen. Hundreds of people gathered at the home and awaited until the funeral services were read at the home and followed the procession to the grave where the last service was read over the slain banker.”
