Although known to be in poor health and rapidly failing the past few weeks, the death of “Uncle Billie” Cone which occurred suddenly Wednesday morning was a distant shock to relatives and unlimited number of friends. Mr. Cone was one of those ever[pleasant men, honorable of purpose and a “solid” type of citizenship which every community needs. His passing brings sorrow not only to the bereft companion and other relatives, but a legion of friends who knew him best.
William P. Cone, the third son of Ezra P. and Mary Cone, was born June 15, 1845, and departed this life on December 27, 1922, aged 77 years, 6 months and 12 days.
When he was 16 years of age he enlisted in the Union army and served as a soldier for over three years. After he was discharged he returned to his old home in Monroe county.
In the year of 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Jane Mahan. For a short time the couple continued to live near Albia, Iowa. Four children were born to this union, two boys and two girls. Two boys and the oldest daughter have preceded their father in death. The youngest daughter, Mrs. Charley Kincaid, lives at Pueblo, Colo.
About 1881 the family came to Clarke county and settled near Murray. After a four years residence here the family answered the lure of the west and went to Great Bend, Kansas, where they resided for many years.
On June 29, 1889, his wife died. Mr. Cone continued to live at Great Bend until 1919 when he moved back to Murray, Iowa. In December of that year he was united in marriage to Mrs. Amanda Fazel, whom he had known from early youth.
While living in Murray during his early residence here he converted and united with the M. E. church. Later when he moved to Kansas he transferred his church letter there where he held his membership at the time of his death.
He was an earnest and faithful member of the I.O.O.F. for many years. He had been in poor health for some time but for the last three weeks he failed rapidly. He maintained, however, a very hopeful spirit and insisted the day before he died that he would soon be well again.
He is survived by three brothers—E. T. and W. E. Cone of Murray and A. C. Cone of Primrose, Nebraska, and many other relatives and a host of warm friends who mourn his departure.
His devoted wife is bowed in great grief, and she has the sympathy of the community in her great bereavement.
Following a brief service at the home in Murray Thursday morning at 9:30 by Rev. Geo. W. Hall, pastor of the Murray M. E. church, the remains were taken overland to Lorimor, where they were entrained for Great Bend, Kans., where interment was made.
