Dr. August W. Krause, 87, of 304 South 1st, Cherokee, Iowa, died Saturday March 17, 2001, in Mercy Medical Center, Sioux City, following a brief illness. Dr. Krause was a veterinarian in Cherokee for many years.
Services will be held Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Cherokee. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee. The Greenwood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He was born February 21, 1914, in Fenton, Iowa to Gustav and Lydia (Meyer) Krause. He attended schools in Fenton, graduating in 1932. He then attended Iowa State University, graduating as Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1937. On August 31, 1941 he married Marlis Jensen in Des Moines. She preceded him in death March 1, 1980. On February 19, 1983, he married Betty Conard Bakker in Cherokee.
He served on the Cherokee City Council for 8 years, the Board of Health for 16 years, the Regional Health Planning Council for 8 years, and was a City Recreation Commissioner for 12 years. Dr. Krause was instrumental in forming Little League Baseball in Cherokee. A supporter of the Iowa State Cyclones, he served on the Parent’s Association at Iowa State University for 2 years.
He played on the Iowa State Baseball team in 1934 and 1935. He was a member of the Iowa and American Veterinary Medicine Association, member of the state Board of Examiners, Bethlehem Lutheran Church and member of the Dean’s Advisory Council at Iowa State University receiving the Stange Award for meritorious service to veterinary medicine in 1976.
Following graduation from ISU he worked in Spencer, Iowa for the U.S.D.A. for 5 ½ years before moving to Cherokee in 1942. He was in partnership with Nate Phipps as Krause and Phipps as Krause and Phipps D.V.M., later Krause, Phipps, and Sonka before his retirement.
Survivors include his wife; 1 son Kim Krause and his wife Lucy of Overland Park, Kansas; 1 daughter Lorri Stevenson and her husband Jim of Quimby, Iowa; 1 brother Edmund Krause and his wife Lois of Des Moines; 3 stepchildren, Sharyl Mathison and her husband Kyle of Louisville, Kentucky; Julie Tolzin and her husband Chuck of Cherokee, and Susan Yenerich and her husband Phil of Santa Rosa, Calif.; 4 grandchildren and 8 step-grandchildren, and 7 step great grandchildren.
