Arlo L. “Ole” Johnson, 71, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Sunday, December 28, 1997, in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota following a short illness.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 31 at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Mr. Gregg Johnson will officiate, and burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. There will be military rites at the graveside by L. A. Wescott VFW Post #2253.
Mr. Johnson was born January 9, 1926, at Truman, Minnesota to Lewis and Rachel (Beedle) Johnson. He graduated from the Fairmont, Minnesota high school. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy with the Sea Bees. On May16, 1952 he married Nancy Conley at Jackson, Minnesota. He farmed with the Johnson Brothers north of Cherokee and was later a farm hand for John Engel. He was a front-end specialist for 20 years at Love Tire Shop in Cherokee and he had lived in Cherokee since 1950. He was a member of L. A. Wescott VFW Post #2253.
Survivors include two sons: Johnnie Johnson and his wife, Maureen of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Michael Johnson and his wife, Tara, Spencer, Iowa; a daughter, Barbara Johnson, Sioux City, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; five brothers: Edwin Johnson, Cherokee; Dick Johnson and his wife, Germayne, Sutherland, Iowa; Marlyn Johnson and his wife, Jeanie , Gladstone, Missouri; Dwayne Johnson, Blue Eye, Minnesota and Earl Johnson and his wife, Elaine, Brainerd, Minnesota; four sisters: Evelyn Hoppe, Granada, Minnesota; Velma and her husband Chris Hagen, Fairmont; Dottie Arndt, Westminster, California and Marilyn Haes, Branson, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Larry Norvan, and Eldon; and a sister, Helen Schendel. (Source: Scrapbook clipping hand dated 12-30-97)
