Marvin Lavern “Sven” Bengston, 77, of rural Alta, Iowa passed away Monday, May 25, 1998, at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 27 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Aurelia. Burial will be in the Scandinavian Cemetery, Alta.
Mr. Bengston was born November 15, 1920, at Quimby, Iowa to Ernest and Hulda (Gunnerson) Bengston. He attended Fairview School, graduating in 1938, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1944. On December 21, 1946 he married Elaine Booth at her family home, rural Alta. He farmed from 1952 until his death, and had also worked evening at the Mental Health Institute in Cherokee, Iowa for 15 years. He was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, Aurelia, and L. A. Wescott VFW Post #2253, Cherokee. He loved kids, all sports in Aurelia and Florida and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine; two sons: Brian Bengston and his wife Maggie, and Jim Bengston and his wife, Corrinne, all of Kissimmee, Florida; a daughter, Paula and her husband, Jim Weathers, Aurelia; seven grandchildren: Heather, Kevin, Ken and his wife, Debi, Amanda, Adam and Christopher Bengston and Bill Weathers; two great grandchildren: Lindsay and Megan Ramirez; three sisters-in-law: Catherine Bengston, Denison, Iowa; Chrystle Bengston, Lake View, Iowa; and Lois McCabe, Freeland, Washington; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Glenn and Darrell; and a sister, Mildred Roubicek.
