Emanuel Pierce was born in Cornwall, England, Jan. 28, 1865. He fell asleep at 11:30 Monday night, Dec. 14, 1914, being 49 years, 10 months and 16 days old.

In the year 1875 he and his sister, Mrs. Chas. Addy came to America in the care of an uncle, their father who had preceded them in the year 1866 now having prepared a home for them in Linden, Wis. In the year 1875 the family moved to Iowa and bought the farm on which the Epworth church now stands. The year 1888 Emanuel spent in California returning after one year’s stay. In 1890 he again went to California and there in San Jose, he met Miss Rebbecca Cougle, who became his wife in September 10, 1893. They immediately returned to Cleghorn, Iowa and went to farming on the home place, where they remained until three years ago.

He has resided in the immediate vicinity since three years ago. To this home were born five boys, George, Vivian, Ray, Walter and Wendell, all of whom, with the wife, mourn the loss. He leaves also a mother, five sisters and two brothers. For three years he has been in poor health. During his sickness he has been a patient sufferer and often expressed a wish that the end might come. He passed away as peacefully as a child going to sleep.

The funeral was held Thursday, Dec. 17, at the Epworth Church conducted by rev. G. R. Gilbert of Marcus M. E. Church. Interment was had in the Marcus cemetery.

Relatives from away present were Mrs. E. Pierce, son and daughter of LeMars; Mrs. Viola Becker of Redwood Falls, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lemon of Beresford, S. D. (Source: The Cherokee Times, Mon. Dec. 28, 1914, pg. 3)
