Funeral services for Sister Mary Philomena Crock R.S.M., 91, Aurora, Ill., were held Sept. 20, 1988 at St. Mary's Catholic church in Tipton, with the Rev. Joseph P. Hines officiating. Pallbearers were Steve, John, Dick and Blain Crock, Steve Seelman and Dennis Marchik. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery, Tipton.
Sister Crock died Sept. 16 at Mercy Center in Aurora, Ill., following an extended illness.
The daughter of Jasper and Philomena Burkhart Crock, she was born July 14, 1897 in Harrietsville, Ohio. She attended rural Cedar county schools and received a master's degree from the University of Iowa. She received a degree from the Mercy School of Nursing, graduating from the first nursing class at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Sister Crock was a nun and was at Mercy hospital in Iowa City for 50 years. She had lived in Mechanicsville and spent some time in both Marshalltown and Davenport. She also did mission work in Georgetown, British Guiana.
She was a member of the Sisters of Mercy, entering the sisterhood in 1915. She professed her vows in 1918 and was director of the School of Nursing at Mercy hospital in the 1940's. She was the hospital administrator in the 1950's.
Sister Crock is survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Leander and Raymond Crock, formerly of Tipton and Clarence and Norbert Crock, formerly of Mechanicsville.
