John H. Betten
(February 14, 1938 - November 29, 2014)

John H. Betten, age 76, of Pomeroy, passed away on November 29, 2014, at Pomeroy, Iowa. John Henry Betten was born on February 14,1938, to the parents, John Reiners Betten and Jessie Catherine Block Betten. He was born on the family farm just northwest of Jolley. His childhood was spent helping his family with the farm. He attended Immanuel Lutheran Church School in Pomeroy and also Jolley Community School in Jolley. He graduated with the class of 1956. John joined the National Guard and had active duty for three months. Later he was honorably discharged due to his failing eyesight. He met and married Cheryl O'Brien of Fort Dodge and were divorced later. To this union five children were born; Jennifer, Leah, Jason, Bryce and a son Lowell who passed away shortly after his birth. His love of children and his love of life were his true treasures. Often times he would take his kids, friends, and nephews to the Pomeroy carnival or out to eat. After dating for many months, he married the love of his life Alice Holloway Betten on May 15, 1993. They stayed on the family farm until moving into Pomeroy where they made their home. The last few years John made his home at the Pomeroy Care Center. Survivors include his wife Alice of Pomeroy; children: Jennifer (Terry) Wideman of Mesa, Arizona, Leah Betten of Mesa, Arizona, Jason ( Stephanie) Betten of Humboldt and Bryce Betten of Mesa, Arizona; step-children: Toni (Jeff) Lentz of Pomeroy, James Holloway of Waukee, Laura (Jake) Jacobsen of Eugene, Oregon, and Shawn ( Angie) Holloway of Reinbeck; grandchildren: Alexis, Caleb, Briana Betten; Samuel, Nushea, Sara, and Silas Wideman; and Olivia Betten; step-grandchildren include Jason, Clinton (Taryn), Brandon, and Kody Butler; Amanda, Amber, and Allison Holloway; Anna and Abbi Holloway; and Ashley (Robert) Reed; brother: Louis (Althea) Betten of Jolley; many nephews and nieces and his dogs, Maggie and Buffy. Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Jessie Betten, his brother Herman (Gladys) Betten, and sister Pauline Betten.
